In this assignment, we were to reflect on the purpose of our course. Why is my course important? Why is it influential? Why is it needed? What good things come from taking an "Intro to Phonics" course and developing Phonological Awareness? That's what I discussed in this video.
This video required that I dig to the core of my passion and figure out all of the "whys". I had to do a lot of reflecting and thinking. Why did I want to teach this course?
I wanted to teach a Phonics course that taught little ones all about the alphabet, the letters and their sounds, blending those sounds, basic writing and reading. I want to stress how important this class is. It is important because children need to know what words are, before they can read. Before they know what words are, they must learn what letters are and they must become familiar with the sound that each individual letter produces. Phonics is the foundation for an individuals life. It helps them improve their language and literacy. Our lives are heavily impacted by the phonological lessons that our preschool and kindergarten teachers taught us. We are able to read because of them prioritizing the lesson of Phonics.
Once I graduate, I hope to teach kindergarten, and I am so excited to teach children about letters and their sounds! I look forward to seeing the look on their faces when everything "clicks" and being there when they read their first sentence in a book!
Teaching phonics is beautiful, impactful, and necessary. Reading is a wonderful thing! Phonics is the introduction to that! This is the message that I hoped to convey to my "students".
